The Saipan Mayor’s Office and the U.S. Probation Office of the Guam and NMI districts have reached an agreement for the participation of the Saipan Mayor’s Office in the U.S. Probation Office’s Community Service Program. In the context of the agreement, the Probation Office would process offenders that have court ordered community service sentences and reach a work agreement with said offender. The Probation Office would then refer the probationer to the Saipan Mayor’s Office where they will discharge their community service hours. The probationer will then report to the respective agency for orientation. The agency employing the probationer will be in charge of assigning duties and roles befitting their sentence goals, work hours, supervision, equipment and supplies for the probationer, and evaluation their performance. In addition, the agency will administer drug tests to the probationer and schedule changes will go through the Probation Office. Mayor RB Camacho supports the initiative as it not only gives the probationer a chance to redeem themselves in society but to contribute to the beautification efforts of their community while giving them time to reflect to on what it means to be a responsible citizen.
